The prayer shawl ministry is a ministry of compassion. A prayer shawl is a tangible expression of the prayerful support and care a congregation shows to those it comes in contact with who are going through difficult times. The prayer shawls are knitted by church members who pray for the shawl's recipients while they are knitting. The shawl can provide warmth to a sick person, but its real benefit is the spiritual encouragement it conveys.
The co-ordinator of this ministry, Shirley Moorhouse, says, "A prayer shawl can show someone needing a spiritual lift that there are concerned people praying for them. It can also be a powerful symbol of God's enveloping warmth and love during those difficult and lonely days."
